Born in 1970, in Johannesburg. Currently lives in Cape Town.

Paul Edmunds' disciplined art practice relies on a sharp awareness of his environment and a labor intensive studio in which he pours thousands of hours into meticulous constructions. There is always a delicate balance in his work between the history of materials and an abstract composition. Edmunds recalls skateboarding, a personal passion, with Roll, a sculpture built of skateboard wheels cut into hexagons and hence rendered useless. Simultaneously, the work stands on its own as an elegant sculpture independent of its references. Similarly, in Sleeve, constructed with discarded wetsuits, its hyperbolic parabola shape calls to mind idyllic concrete transitions sought by skaters or waves sought by surfers. It delineates a kind of utopian form. However, as a sculpture, it is not only a reference but a new form delineating its own space for contemplation.
Edmunds has exhibited widely in South Africa and is included in several museum collections such as The South African National Gallery and the Tatham Art Gallery. His work is also in the MOMA collection and was included in the exhibition Impressions from South Africa: Printed Art/1960s to Now from March 23 to August 29, 2011.
